After My Accident?
Make sure you do not leave the scene of your accident because you most likely will end up in jail.
Call 911 and report the accident immediately no matter how minor you think it is. Do not admit fault even if you think you were or say anything at the accident scene. Let the police determine who was at fault. Also call your insurance company and report your accident immediately following so they will have record of it. You will be able to pick up a copy of your accident report in a couple days or online.
If you feel your injuries are serious enough and can be life threatening then go to the ER. If the paramedic thinks you can go to a doctor who sees accident victims, listen to them, they are assessing your condition at the accident and have experience with such injuries.
Many times the shock of an accident and the adrenaline flowing, a person will not recognize any pain, soreness or stiffness or bodily damages that could of occurred or inflammation that has begun with no pain. Inflammation will begin first and pain will follow either immediately, that night or days later. Most people look at their cars and think there is not much damage so “I am OK”, studies contradict this stating there is no relationship of personal bodily injury related to car damage. Cars are designed to absorb shock, our bodies are not!
Take pictures with your cell phone or camera of yours and the other person’s car. Be checked out by a doctor experienced in auto injuries within the first 3 days following your accident. If you went to the ER and they did not find any fractures or internal problems and you still have discomfort or pain, go to Injury Care Chiropractic where we treat your type of injuries daily. Most all hospital emergency rooms are mostly concerned about stabilizing fractures, internal organ damage or bleeding. They may tell you that you are “OK”, yet you continue to have pain, spasm or stiffness. Any follow up treatment will be by individual doctors who treat soft tissue injuries of the spine and joints such as we do at Injury Care Chiropractic.
Insurance companies use computer software to determine the value of your injury. One of the first pieces of data that the insurance company will be entering into their software will be whether or not you have seen a doctor within 72 hours of the accident. If you have seen a doctor within that time frame then you have added what is called a value driver to your score in the insurance company software. The next important thing to remember is that you need an examination, diagnosis and treatment plan. Insurance companies want you to take your treatment serious and they will monitor you through your doctor’s notes for compliance. Kentucky law does allow for compensation for pain and suffering following an accident. At Injury Care Chiropractic it is our aim to return you to a pre-injury status as soon as possible. Just call Sherri and she will answer any questions you might have in this most difficult time.
Remember: Seek medical attention even if you feel fine. According to the Consumer Protection Association of America, one third of all car accidents result in injury, some of which may not show up immediately.
“Even if you initially don’t feel much in the way of pain or discomfort get checked out thoroughly on the day of the accident if possible.
Another point to remember many people in accidents want to make deals!
Even when the other person promises to pay out of pocket cash for your car, do not engage them in conversation or make any “deals”. Too many honest and kind people have been left without any money to fix their own car because the at-fault driver promised to pay all damages if they did not call the police. Typically, it is because they have no insurance, don’t have a license, or they have had far too many car wrecks or criminal records on public files.
Your Louisville Expert Doctor of Chiropractic is here to help!
One of the most important things to consider when you have been injured is the experience of the doctor treating injuries such as auto, sports, worker's comp., school bus accidents, and slip and falls. Many facilities are not equipped to handle treatment and rehabilitation following an accident. Many facilities treat family patients. At Injury Care Chiropractic, we have a state of the art office where we can handle the initial pain from injury and follow through with strengthening and conditioning. We are specifically trained in the spine, soft tissues and joints. We want you to return to the pre-injury status you once had before this accident and enjoy a fuller life. Life is movement and your spine and joints provide you with locomotion to enjoy all activities of daily living.
Perhaps the biggest problem surrounding whiplash and soft tissue injuries is a fundamental lack of understanding. Lay people intuitively assume that there should be a close correlation between the actual property damage to the vehicle and the physical damage to the occupant. Study after study has shown that there is really no correlation here. Studies have shown that speeds as slow as 4- 8 mph causes significant musculoskeletal injuries. Even in relatively “slow” whiplash injuries, severe trauma can occur to the bony and soft tissue of the cervical spine:
What about bumpers-Do they really protect the individual?
No, car bumpers are designed to prevent or reduce physical damage to the front and rear ends of passenger vehicles in low speed collisions. Car bumpers are not typically designed to help crash worthiness or occupant protection during front or rear end collisions. In other words, the bumper is not a safety feather intended to prevent the severity of injury to men, women or children. Very important to understand what your insurance company does not. And that is the bumper is designed to protect the trunk, grilled, fuel tank, hood, exhaust, parking lights, headlamps and tailgates in low collision speeds.
What about children in school bus or auto accidents?
Usually we here when accident about children in a vehicle accident. “Oh, they are fine”.
Think about it, the parent is injured, however the children are having no problems.
The very fact children are unable to communicate effectively or afraid to see a doctor because of shots may play a role when a parent asks them. Signs that they could be injured are irritability, difficulty going to sleep or waking up unexpectedly from their normal sleep patterns, crying out at night, restlessness, poor feeding and lethargy. Older children may experience tiredness, lack of range of motion, neck pain or soreness.
This is why it is best to have them examined or checked out by an experienced doctor who sees mostly accidents with children involved.
Auto injuries suffered in an auto accident or school bus accident can cause spinal and joint problems in children which may not be evident for months or, in some cases, years after the incident.
As a result of this potential for children to suffer spinal injuries without any apparent symptoms, it is important that all children involved in auto accidents, no matter how minor, should receive a detailed and thorough examination to ensure that these problems have been excluded.
Important factors to consider:
Body size plays a role in how severe an individuals injury can be. Tall people are at greater risk of “Whiplash”. This is because they are most likely to have head restraints that are too low to be of any help at impact. Individuals with less muscle mass (i.e. women, children and the elderly) pose a higher level of injury risk. People who have degenerative changes such as arthritis at can expect more injuries.
Children with improper positioning and anchoring are at a greater risk for injuries.
Remember: 2G. is twice the force of gravity.
• An impact of 20 mph produces a peak acceleration of the head of 12G into extension.
• Speeds as low as 4-5 mph on human subjects causes forces as high as 4.5G on the
neck and head.
• Headrests are of little value as the force that cause the damage to the neck is
vertically acting, rather than horizontal.

**A new study reported in the journal of Brain Injury shows that whiplash can cause anatomical changes in the brain.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT FINDING:
A study, one of the few to look at the connection between whiplash and brain injury, examined the MRI scans of 1200 neck pain patients and found that those patients suffering from whiplash were more likely to have anatomical changes to the brain resulting in brain injury, specifically, a herniation of the brain called Chiari malformation.
"This condition can be quite painful and endanger the patient's health, with symptoms that may include headaches, neck pain, upper extremity numbness and tingling, and weakness. In a few cases, there can also be lower extremity weakness and brain dysfunction."
It is important to let the doctors at Injury Care Chiropractic document any unfortunate injury you have received. Here we focus on diagnosis and treatment of those involved in accidents whether from a car wreck, slip and fall, school or city bus accident and any sports related accidents.
It is most unfortunate that many children are injured in school bus accidents. Many times they have a mental injury and have flash backs when passing the accident site every day.
If your accident has not had strong documentation, then you could limit or hinder the proper care you might need for your injuries or the compensation for pain and suffering.
If you have been in an auto accident
recently, there are some important decisions you have to make, and if
I were you, I'd make these decisions very carefully.
Q: Should I See An Attorney Before I
See a Doctor?
A: It is important to get checked out
by the doctor first. That way the findings from your exam will allow
you the information you need in order to decide if an attorney is
necessary. Strong documentation of your injuries is very important. If necessary, we can refer you to a reputable and
qualified personal injury attorney.
Q: What If My Car Sustained Only Minor
A: Documented studies done by Charles
Carroll, M.D., Paul McAtee, M.D. and Lee Riley, M.D. revealed that:
"The amount of damage to the automobile bears little relation to
the force applied to the cervical spine (neck) of the occupants."
In other words, the damage to the
passengers is not necessarily directly related to the damage to your vehicle.
** Remember, automobiles are designed and tested to absorb damage from a collision........YOU, YOUR BODY, SPINE, MUSCLES, JOINTS, BONES...........ARE NOT!!!

Injury Care Chiropractic understands the mechanisms of low to high impact car wrecks and their effects upon the the spine, joints, brain and all related soft tissue.
Just think about it......
Whiplash symptoms from a car accident can cause pain right away. But just as common, pain and symptoms sometimes can take a few days or even 2 weeks before you feel them. This makes whiplash a bit complicated as you might think you are not injured after a car accident. Then 2 weeks later you wake up and can barely move your neck, or you find you are have constant headaches. I have even seen patients come in 3-6 months after an accident and have all kinds of whiplash symptoms that seem to of come on overnight when in fact, it was inflammation that has been there since the date of the accident. Most of the time there is dysfunction following sprains and strains, then inflammation, followed by pain. I have seen thousands of patients who had inflammation and very little pain and then finally one day they have full blown major pain.
Injury Care Chiropractic doctors are trained at finding any areas that may have been torn or inflamed following an accident. Very often through examination, other areas are found that were injured and need treatment. If you have had an accident, you need the skills of an experienced Chiropractor to determine if you may have acute or permanent injury. These injuries can last for months and even years. If you may have some problems such as stiffness, soreness, mild. moderate or severe pain.......it is time to be checked out.

MORE CAR WRECK FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW....to make you a safer driver!
Talking on a cell phone while driving gives you the reaction time of a 70 year old, is as dangerous as driving while intoxicated, and in 2009, was a factor in over 25% of all car accidents.
The most likely time to be involved in a fatal car accident is on the weekend between midnight and 3 a.m.
An injury car accident occurs approximately every 14 seconds somewhere in the U.S. It is estimated that, nationwide, on average, a driver will curse over 32,000 times in a lifetime while driving a car.
In the U.S., car crashes are the #1 cause of death for teenagers every year.Almost 40% of fatal car accidents involve the use of alcohol. Most car accidents occur within 3 miles of a person’s house.
There is a 41% increase of fatal accidents on Super Bowl Sunday. 11% of fatal traffic accidents involved large trucks (trucks with gross vehicle weights of 10,000 pounds or more).
FACTS continued ....
Most believe you can not be injured going less that 12mph. The fact is, only about 22% of auto injuries occur when impacts were greater than 12 mph. 60% of injuries happened in car accidents with the low speeds of 6-12 mph. And yet another 18% received soft tissue injury when impact was less the 6 mph.
What about my car damage being minimal? The truth is that you can have a whiplash injury even if your car has no structural damage. Most cars can withstand a crash of 8-12 mph without any damage. More than half of all whiplash injuries happen without any damage to the vehicle. Most people believe that whiplash symptoms will occur immediately after a car accident.
The fact is, an individual may have some pain immediately following a car accident, but whiplash symptoms may not occur for hours, days, weeks or possibly even months. That's why it's imperative that anyone involved in a car accident should seek care immediately to determine whether a whiplash injury or some other injury has actually occurred.
Some believe neck pain is all you have with whiplash injury?
The fact is, there can be many symptoms in a whiplash injury. Neck pain, shoulder injury, dizziness, nausea, and upper back pain are just a few. The following injury statistical averages are astounding and eye opening: 92% of whiplash injuries cause neck pain. 57% suffer headaches, 56% fatigue, 49% shoulder pain, 44% anxiety (yes, anxiety), 42% upper back pain, 39% low back pain, 39% sleep disturbance, 26% impaired concentration. These are many, but not all, symptoms of whiplash injuries.Dr. Byers Jr., M.S., D.C. has also seen many cases of post concussive disorders of the brain along with post-traumatic brain injury and it's effects on mental concentration and memory.
More statistics.............Dr. Byers believes up to 98% of auto accidents are caused from carelessness related to distraction or loss of focus. Please be more careful and pay attention.
PLEASE STAY OFF CELL PHONES
Statistics show that 93% of all car
accidents are due to human error.
Many whiplash symptoms do not appear
immediately after a car accident, it may be days later when one may have
neck pain, back pain, headaches, sciatica or long term pain which can lead to arthritis.
In 2006, motor vehicle crashes were the
leading cause of death for every age from 3 through 34.
93% of patients with chronic whiplash
pain who have failed medical and physical therapy care improve with
chiropractic adjustments. (Injury, 1996)
Men and women are affected by a car
Accidents victims often feel pain such
as, neck pain, back pain, vertigo and migraine headaches with many
other health related problems.
The cost to society from car accidents
runs into the tens of billions of dollars and disables up to a third
of a million people each year.
Pedestrian fatalities account for 11%
of motor vehicle fatalities.
On average, a pedestrian is injured in
a traffic accident every 8 minutes.
On average, a pedestrian is killed in a
traffic accident every 111 minutes.
a matter of fact...
Doctors Are Not Trained In The Detection Of These Hidden Injuries...
you have been in an auto accident, you need a doctor who is trained
and has the experience in the bio-mechanics of the human body; someone who treats these
injuries every day. In addition,x-rays can be taken to find out
if there has been any structural damage. Further testing such as an MRI or CT scan sometimes are ordered to further evaluate your problems. In our office, we evaluate
auto accident victims everyday and will make any appropriate referrals to other
health care providers if needed.
- Our responsibility is giving you an examination and documenting any or all injuries you have sustained as the result of an auto, school, work or sports injury. A diagnosis and treatment plan is then given to put you on the road to recovery.
